Choosing the Perfect Color Palette for Your Home

Blog

Creating the right color palette for your home can feel overwhelming, but it doesn’t have to be. The colors you choose set the tone for how your space feels, flows, and functions. Whether you’re updating one room or redefining your home as a whole, a thoughtful home color scheme brings cohesion and intention to every space.

Start With a Feeling, Not a Color

Before choosing paint, think about the mood you want to create. Do you need more energy? More stimulation? A sense of calm or grounding? Starting with a paint swatch can limit your vision. For example:

  • Soft neutrals and muted tones create a peaceful, timeless feel
  • Bold choices can bring personality and energy
  • Warm tones add coziness and comfort

Your emotional goal should guide your entire interior color palette.

Consider the Lighting

Test colors in the space they’ll be used. Color is entirely influenced by light, so always test paint samples in your home and observe them throughout the day. A color that looks perfect in a store can feel completely different once it’s on your walls.

Create Balance, Not Competition

One of the easiest ways to create a balanced color palette is by following the 60-30-10 design rule:

  • 60% – Main color (walls, large furniture)
  • 30% – Secondary color (upholstery, curtains)
  • 10% – Accent color (decor, pillows, art)

Don’t Be Afraid of Color

Color is one of the most powerful tools in design. It sets the tone of your space and reflects your personality.

If you’re hesitant, start small. Bring in color with a single wall, a room, or even through furnishings and décor. Color doesn’t have to be bold to be impactful, but it should feel intentional.

Think About Flow From Room to Room

Your home should feel connected, not like a series of unrelated spaces. We often describe it as a story, with each room as a chapter. Consistency in undertones, repeated elements, and gradual transitions help create that sense of flow.

Your room colors don’t need to match, but they should feel like part of the same story.

Let Personality Come Through in the Details

If committing to wall color feels like too much, express the feeling you’re seeking with accent pieces: pillows, artwork, and accessories. These are easy and economical to update, and allow you to evolve your space over time.

Final Thoughts

The perfect color palette isn’t just about what looks good. It’s about what feels right for your home and your lifestyle. With a clear vision and thoughtful planning, you can create a space that feels cohesive, intentional, and uniquely yours.

If your home isn’t telling your story, we’d love to help you change that. Reach out to start your design journey today.

Impact Home Staging Experts & Interiors by Impact

For nearly two decades, Darla Rowley shaped the look and feel of Metro Detroit homes through both the process of home staging and the art of interior design. Her love of design led her to create Impact Home Staging Experts, now the largest staging company in Michigan. Her philosophy was simple: every space has the potential to inspire and tell a story.

A dynamic and visionary leader, Darla built Impact on her signature blend of creativity, professionalism, and warmth — with an unwavering focus on exceptional service. She instilled in our team a standard of excellence that has earned more 5-star reviews than any competitor in Michigan and Best of Houzz recognition for eight consecutive years.

Darla passed away in 2025 after a courageous battle with cancer, but her vision lives on in every home we stage and every space we design. Today, we honor her legacy through the continued growth of our design practice and the creation of The Studio at Interiors by Impact — a natural evolution of the brand she so lovingly built.

Her spirit continues to guide and inspire everything we do. She remains, always, the heart of Impact.
